Andy Lau Not Impressed With Hollywood Adaptation of 'Infernal Affairs'
Hong Kong actor and singer Andy Lau comment on the new Martin Scorsese film 'The Departed' last Friday in Hong Kong. Even though he gave the movie an 8 out of 10, he didn't have a lot of good things to say about the Hollywood movie.
'The Departed' was adapted from Lau's crime thriller 'Infernal Affairs', which topped Hong Kong box office records in 2002. Lau said that the Americanized version has too much foul language and not enough female character. He even compared himself with Matt Damon, since both played the same role. 'I focused more on my character's psychology and made my role not such a bad guy superficially, while Damon's portrayal made the charachter absolutely evil!
'Infernal Affairs', also known as Wu Jian Dao in China, tells a story about a gangster who infiltrates the police (Lau) and a police officer who goes undercover in a gang (Tony Leung). And both of them have separate love stories with two women played by Kelly Chen and Sammi Cheng.
In 'The Departed', the undercover gangster in the police is played by Matt Damon and the undercover policeman in the gang by Leonardo DiCaprio. Both get romantically involved with the police psychiatrist played by Vera Farmiga.
